Programs

Welcome to the Washington Heights Community Ministries Program Page.

This page will give you a brief overview of the programs we have to offer.

Seniors

The Typical senior citizen in the Washington Heights Community lives alone on a fixed and limited income. Their health and strength is often failing and they usually have limited assistance from family and/or friends. these conditions often:

          -     Leave seniors feeling isolated.
          -     Make it difficult for them to maintain their homes.
          -     Leave them unable to transport themselves to appropriate medical care and shopping needs.
          -     Limit their resources/ability to prepare healthy meals for themselves.
          -     Hinder them from sustaining a connection to the community.
          -     leave them unable to enjoy the company of peers/others.

WHCM alleviates the challenges and removes the barriers facing seniors by providing a neighborhood-based resource with services designed to help address their various needs. Monday through Thursday, area senior residents take part in daily activities such as field trips, arts and crafts, bingo, exercise programs, cooking sessions, Bible study and health screening. Monthly shopping trips are also available for program members to pay bills and stop at area pharmacies and department stores. Transportation is available for any seniors requiring it and midday meals are provided by the Community Action Agency of South Central Michigan (CAASCM). Elder Park distribution is also held monthly. Partial funding is provided by the Area Agency on Aging, private donations and the United Methodist Church.

Our Place (Youth)

A structured after school program that provides students in the Battle Creek Public School District, area districts and charter schools with study kits, assistance with homework, reading support , computer access, positive enrichment and team building workshops. Transportation from school and meals are also provided. The purpose of the program is to assist elementary and middle school students in developing skills, self-esteem and confidence to succeed. Core subjects are the program's focus with an emphasis on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Program funding is provided by the United Way, the Community Development Block Grant, the Battle Creek Community Foundation and the United Methodist Church.

Health Organization Leadership and Learning Academy (Youth)

H.O.L.L.A educates students and their families the benefits of healthy lifestyles and nutrition. Healthy People 2010 identified overweight and obesity as 1 of 10 leading health indicators and called for a reduction in the proportion of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese. H.O.L.L.A. teaches participants to make better meal choices when away from home, and how establishing healthy lifestyle practices can impact them over their lifetime, Each student will keep a journal of long term goals, and engage in field trips, physical activities, and in-house lectures to which families are invited to participate. Funding is provided by WK Kellogg Foundation and United Methodist Church.

Congregate Meals

Washington Heights is one of only two sites in the City of Battle Creek that provides one nutritional meal per day, four days a week, totaling 208 serving days per year; with the other being the Salvation Army. WHCM is also the only serving site that is approved and licensed at the city, state, and federal levels. In 2007 WHCM served over 26,000 meals to 246 unduplicated men, women and children. There are several feeding sites scattered throughout the city, but they do not run daily. Given that participants in nutrition programs rarely have transportation, several sites are necessary to ensure that no person has to go hungry in Battle Creek, Health department trained and certified staff and volunteers serve healthy, nutritious meals daily, Monday- Thursday from 3:00-4:00 PM, and Saturday mornings from 8:00-9:00AM. The program is a recipient of funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), private donations, and the United Way Program Delivery Partner.
